Steve Reich has been called “our greatest living composer” (The New York Times) and “the most original musical thinker of our time” (The New Yorker). A pioneer of musical minimalism, his music transcends stylistic category, while his influence extends far beyond the contemporary “classical music” scene. Mr. Reich will discuss his music (at 7:30 pm in the Recital Hall) following a short evening concert featuring the seminal Piano Phase for two pianos and Vermont Counterpoint for eleven flutes, performed by UVM faculty and students. An afternoon bassoon concert (2:00 pm in the Livak Ballroom, Davis Center) will include Reich’s
Clapping Music and works of other minimalist and post-minimalist composers.
This is a free event.
