Calvin Dreams: Reading + Conversation w/ Joy Houlder

Join author and illustrator Joy Houlder for a reading of her book, Calvin Dreams: And that He Will Be Bigger than the Moon!”. Joy is a working artist and community activist in New England. This program is an opportunity to learn more about local community activism, and what it means to uphold a mission of inclusion in your work. Joy’s book aims to provide representation for young black readers and she believes that black children deserve to dream beyond the fight for liberation, especially at such a young age.

About Joy Houlder

Joy Houlder is a surrealist illustrator and author with a Bachelors in Counseling Psychology who enjoys creating artwork that involves people and dream-like structures. Joy especially focuses on bringing representation to people of color through her art by challenging the misrepresentation of marginalized individuals.

She has published her first children’s book in December 2019, ‘Calvin Dreams’ which involves positively highlighting a black child that adventures through strange and fantastic dream worlds. She can be known for participating in community art projects such as the ‘Black Lives Matter’ mural in Bushnell park, “End Racism Now’ Mural in Windsor, and more.
During the day, Joy is an art teacher that provides inclusive and multicultural lessons to her students and while working on projects with fellow authors and commissioners
