Spring Move Out Project (SMOP)
Whether you’re moving out or you just want a little more elbow room, the annual Spring Move Out Project (SMOP) is the time and the place for unloading unwanted—but still usable—household goods. Students and area residents bring clothing, books, household items, furniture, and non-perishable food items down to this annual community recycling and swap event. Leftovers will be donated to local charities and reuse stores.
This popular street swap encourages reuse, recycling, and overall better management of unwanted items resulting during student move-out times.
During the one day SMOP event, Burlington students and area residents are encouraged to bring the following items in good condition to the special collection/community swap sites:
- Clothing (must be clean and dry)
- Household items
- Non-perishable food
SMOP is taking place in two locations:
- BUELL ST (between Orchard Terrace and South Union Street)
- LOOMIS ST (between Booth Street and North Willard Street).
Items not claimed during the event will be donated to local charities, including ReSOURCE, Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program, and the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf, among others.
Furniture in poor condition and other trash will be accepted for a fee at dumpsters ($5-25, depending on the items). These dumpsters will be available only during SMOP.
ReSOURCE will be accepting certain electronics (TVs, computers & peripherals) in any condition for recycling.
Those who can’t make it to SMOP should consider donating items directly to one of the organizations listed above or check out our reuse options page. Some may even pick up.
Certain items are also accepted at CSWD Drop-Off Centers, though fees may be charged for some items.
Looking for stuff at bargain prices (i.e. FREE) and can’t make SMOP? Stop by one or all of CSWD’s Drop-Off Centers and ‘shop’ at the ReUse Zone.
