BORED Pizza Crawl

If you’re a Catamount, it’s likely that you’ve had a slice of pizza within the past few weeks. Between free dorm delivery options, RA pizza coupons, and the closeness of most ‘za shops to downtown Burlington’s resident college bars, there are plenty of pies to be had. However, so many options can feel overwhelming at times, and you may be wondering which spot to swing by for your slice.

I’m certainly no expert, but as a UVM senior, I’ve tried my fair share of different local slices. While I grew up in the Tri-State area, which is known across the country (and maybe even around the world) for its distinctive pizza styles, I would argue that the vast majority of pies are plain ‘ol delicious. I’ve never really understood the pizza snob narrative, because I’ve never had a bad slice of pizza. Dough, cheese, sauce– what’s the worst that could happen?

Personally, I enjoy all of the slices from the establishments listed below. Some of them are thick-crust, while others are thin (and some are super-thin), but they’re all yummy and affordable for a college student with limited funds. So, without further ado, let’s review some pizza.

Pizza in Downtown BTV, Reviewed

Domino’s

Ain’t no shame in a classic. If you like your ‘za with a sturdy, yet soft crust, then Domino’s might be the one for you. With three delivery locations close to campus, and delivery that runs late, it wouldn’t be a misstep to order some fresh pies straight to your dorm or off-campus door. And trust me, they’ll be hot and slightly crispy every time. Plus, the franchises close at 1am on weekdays, and 2 on weekends, so even those late-night cravings can end up satisfied.

My order: Medium thin-crust sausage-green pepper-onion pizza; parmesan bread bites

Folino’s

Folino’s has a die-hard fanbase for a reason. While their pizzas will run you slightly more than the average local shop, their pizza is worth it. Their slices are served on a traditional thin-style sourdough crust, and they’re always fired to perfection. Expect fresh slices to have a nice crispness on the outside, with the inner layers of dough retaining a nice soft– and slightly chewy– texture. Their award-winning pies come with all sorts of toppings, ranging from asparagus and bacon to sauteed mushrooms, caramelized onions, and olive oil. Pop in to a location for a lunch slice soon, and eagerly await the opening of the South Burlington location (I know I am).

My order: Small Fungi pizza (olive oil base, three cheese blend, caramelized onions, sauteed button and shiitake mushrooms, parsley, parm, truffle oil)

Mr Mike’s

A downtown Burlington staple, Mr. Mike’s Pizza sells what is probably my favorite regular slice. With their no-frills setup, Mike’s slings slices from sun-up to… sun-up like there’s no tomorrow. Located on the corner of S. Winooski Ave and Main St, their prime location ensure a steady flow of daily regulars, and a bustling late-night college crowd. The shop’s slices won’t break your budget, and they’re some of the freshest, largest slices you can procure in the area. Grab a buddy and head on down for a round of pool and a delicious pie.

My order: A classic slice of buff-chick-za. (Fun fact, I didn’t like this slice before I tried it at Mike’s)!

Leonardo’s

UVM students are no stranger to Leonardo’s Pizza. At an RA event on your dorm’s floor? There’s definitely going to be Leonardo’s. Your club’s getting pizza delivered? It’s probably Leonardo’s. And it’s popular for a reason! In my opinion, their slices feature a little bit of everything, and there’s a nice crossover of many of the aforementioned attributes on this list. Plus, there are infinity Leonardo’s coupons floating around campus, so it’s really tough to not get a deal. Spend some time perusing their menu before you order, because there are a lot of specially-made pies with fun and funky toppings.

My order: A large cheese, pepperoni, or sausage-pepper-onion pie (can you tell that last one’s my favorite?)

Piesano’s

Piesano’s is another downtown Burlington classic, and another late-night giant. Their huge pizza slices feature a slightly doughier crust than other establishments (my favorite), and they load it up with toppings of your choice. Their menu also features tacos, scrumptious jumbo cookies, and a Jarritos fridge. Yes, you heard that right. If you’re not going out to grab yourself a tasty slice and soda, what are you even doing right now?

My order: 2 cheese slices + a tamarind Jarritos (the best flavor…. Argue with ya mama)

Three Needs

The Three Needs Pizza Cube is nothing short of an institution, and the standards of their slices speaks to their loyal fanbase. Personally, I’ve found Needs-za to be the closest in quality and consistency to the NYC metro area pizzerias of my youth. Their slices are arguably the thinnest and crispiest on this list, and they’re made fresh right in front of your eyes. With designated lines both inside and outside, you can acquire some pies whether or not you’re of the proper age to enter Three Needs. Cheap, hot, and affordable– check, check, and check!

My order: A slice ‘o pepperoni (my mouth is watering as I type this)

Bramble

BOREDie Emma enjoys dinner at Bramble. The sit-down restaurant has a slightly upscale vibe and uses high-quality, locally sourced ingredients in its dishes, including their Bramble pizza pie!

Honorable Mention

The cat’s out of the bag… Bramble is not a Burlington pizza parlor, but I had to include it on the list anyways, since it’s just so damn good. Check out this Essex restaurant if you want to knock your

socks off with a delicious upscale dinner, and make sure you split a pizza with a pal while you’re at it. Made from scratch with local ingredients, their pizza is bursting with flavor and will leave you wanting more. It’s worth the 20-minute drive, I promise!

My order: A whole salsiccia or Motto-Guzzi pie
