Welcome Home Catamounts! A Sneak Peek into WOW 2024
Hello all!
My name is Casey, I am a member of the UVM Program Board (UPB), and this summer I have been working as a Campus Programs intern. The CP staff here at UVM have been hard at work planning for your arrival to campus in August! The first week of classes is known as Week of Welcome (WOW for short), and this year, WOW is August 26th through the following Monday, September 2nd. We have jam-packed every moment of this week with crafts, games, and major events for you to look forward to when you arrive on campus!
I know firsthand how scary coming back to school can be, whether it’s your first year as a Catamount, or your fourth. However, with 30+ events to choose from, we hope that WOW can help you adjust, make new friends, and have fun! I’ve put together a list of some of the events I am most excited about during WOW, and I hope you’ll choose one of them, or even all of them to stop by and enjoy!
Coffee on the Commons
Whether it be the tumblers or the coffee that gets people buzzing, Coffee on the Commons is a recurring WOW event that is always a hit! Every weekday during Week of Welcome, we give out FREE coffee on the lawn outside of the Davis Center. You heard me right, completely free coffee from Kestrel Coffee roasters, anytime from 10am-1pm!! Stop by between classes, or if you’re in the market for more free things, we give away some awesome WOW tumblers every hour, on the hour, 10am, 11am, and 12pm, complete with our Week of Welcome branding. I highly recommend grabbing a tumbler on Monday and bringing it back for some more Kestrel Coffee refills throughout the week! Rumor has it there might also be free bagels from The Bagel Place! Which days? You’ll have to find out…
Pub Quiz
Another one of our most beloved UVM Program Board (UPB) traditions, Pub Quiz happens EVERY Wednesday night during the school year and is one of my favorite events on campus. If you’re a new Catamount, you may want to get competitive with 4 rounds of trivia, starting at 9pm in Brennan’s Pub in the Davis Center. If you and your friends have a good team name, some competitive spirit, and a lot of brains, come test your skills and win some prizes!
Sunset Creemee Walk
As a long time soft-serve ice cream lover, I was so confused when I moved here from MA and discovered that soft-serve is not an option here. A classic Vermont Summer snack, adjusting to the creemee is all a part of moving to VT, not to mention, it’s even better than soft serve. My favorite combo is their black-raspberry and maple twist, I know it sounds weird but it’s delicious, I promise! Join us at the Catamount Statue at 7pm on Sunday for a walk downtown to get your very first creemee!! Burlington Bay Market and Cafe overlooks the lake, boasts some great flavors, and is a picture-perfect place for you to enjoy a FREE CREEMEE on us!
Live on the Lawn
The Saturday of WOW, come join UPB as we put on the first campus concert of the year! Located on the Davis Center Outdoor Stage from 7-10pm, spectacular student bands: Fawn, Hand in Pants, and Comatose Kids will knock your socks off. Pro tip, grab a blanket, snacks, and your friends and set yourself up with a good seat for the night! Accessible seating will be provided on request if sitting on the ground doesn’t work for you.
I am so thrilled about welcoming so many people to UVM this year, and I can’t wait to see all your lovely faces at these events! If none of the activities I listed seem up your alley, there are so many other fun and exciting WOW options to choose from. I recommend following UPB on Instagram @uvm_upb, where you can find updates about the other amazing events we plan throughout the year, especially our FALLFEST 2024 artist reveal! Also, be sure to keep checking uvmbored.com to read some blogs like this one and get some info about ALL activities happening on and off campus this semester! Working on these events has been a highlight of my summer, and I am so so excited to share them with everyone during this year’s WOW!!!!
Have a fantastic rest of your summer, lots of love!
