THE SOUND OF (BLACK) MUSIC

An Afrofuturist Take on Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Classic Musical

The hills are alive with the sound of Black music! Experience the songs from one of the most beloved American musical classics as reimagined through an Afrofuturistic lens, led by a dynamic group of musicians and vocalists, including Brianna Thomas, Chareene Wade, Vuyo Sotashe, and many more incredible artists.

Conceived and created by 2022 Burlington Discover Jazz Festival curators Michael Mwenso and Jono Gasparro, The Sound of (Black) Music reinterprets and reframes the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical through jazz, blues, funk, gospel, R&B, hip-hop, and beyond, paying tribute to the rich history of Black music with rapturous, electric performances and a communal spirit.
