Interested in Living (and Learning) at UVM Next Year?

by Ruby LaBrusciano-Carris

The Living Learning Center is a UVM institution, which, as a relic of UVM’s past “Experimental College”, is one of the most interesting and alternative living situations that you can find at UVM. The purpose of the Living Learning Center is to allow students the opportunity to create communities of students centered around the same interests, passions, and goals. It is a wonderful way to meet people who are interested in similar things, and also to become a part of the larger L/L community, which has frequent events and many valuable resources for living and studying—such as the Fireplace Lounge, the Computer Lab, the gallery, the Marché, and the Writing Center, just to name a few.

If you are thinking about living on campus next year, it would certainly not be to your detriment to come to the Living Learning Program Fair, happening this Thursday from 3pm-5pm in the Fireplace Lounge. The program fair will showcase all of the programs that are available to apply to for the 2014-15 year. Being a part of a program means living in a suite with others in the same program, and participating in the events and activities that each program director has created for their program.

There is literally a different kind of program for every kind of diverse interests, ranging from Japanese Visual Culture to the German House, to the Tea & Coffee House, and everything in between. The Living Learning Center also welcomed ten brand new programs into the mix, which bring even more diversity of interests and ideas to L/L. These programs include:

  • The Spoken Word
  • World Music Exploration
  • Adventure House
  • The BBC (British Broadcasting Channel) House
  • Knitting and Crochet House
  • Future Teachers, Administrators, and Social Workers
  • Not Your Average Sport
  • Tree House
  • Under the Sea House
  • Yoga and Mediation House

This list is truly just the tip of the iceberg, so if anything tickles your fancy, or if you want to see what else L/L has to offer, this is the time to do it. March 10th is the deadline for a programmed housing application, which is a necessary step for applying to a Living Learning program, and the Program Fair is going to be the best opportunity for anyone to get a better feel of the incredible range of programs that are available to everyone.
